For the benefit
of those who are thinking of pursuing a career
as an occupational therapist, we are pleased
to provide you with information on the nature
of the job, the prospects of this career and
some valuable guidelines for occupational
therapists who intend to work in Singapore.
Job Description
Occupational therapists use activity and human
performance in therapy. In treatment of children
with disabilities, occupational therapists
use activities to assist them to develop thinking,
writing, and social skills, so that they can
function within the school environment. Others
may use splinting and hand therapy techniques
on an injured worker after hand surgery, to
enable them to return to gainful employment.
Please refer to What
is OT? section to know more about what
occupational therapists do.
Career Development
There is a worldwide shortage of occupational
therapists, so a wide variety of opportunities
are available for graduates. Over time, occupational
therapists may choose to specialise in the
clinical, administrative, or academic field.
They may become clinical specialists in physical
rehabilitation, community healthcare or psychosocial
rehabilitation, occupy middle management positions;
or take on lectureship. There is also a world
trend to work in health promotion and wellness
programs.
